Believe it or not, but these uncertain times of doom and gloom with talk of recession actually provide a great opportunity for small businesses and entrepreneurs. There are several reasons but the main one is that it allows creativity and new ideas to flourish while big business has to battle the inertia of changing long held entrenched ideas and beliefs.
All industries either are, or will be affected by this recession in one way or another, depending on their ability to adapt and evolve to the changing circumstances. The evolution will come from the grassroots small businesses and entrepreneurs that are motivated by survival as opposed to just keeping a job.
Sadly, there are far too many small business operators who really have no idea what customer service is all about. I was shocked and saddened by the Palmerston North motel that missed a golden opportunity to put a mistake right on National Television, not once but twice in the same night!!
Many of you reading this will be dealing with business people some time in the near future and I bet you will notice a change in the way they react to you. They will either be despondent about the hard times, complaining about low takings and everyone wanting a discount or, they will be positive and proactive about the enormous opportunity to get to know their customers and deliver a quality service aimed fairly and squarely at the needs of their customer.
Which one will you choose?; the complaining discounter, or the upbeat positive value adder? Personally I always buy value. Price comes a very poor second place behind quality service and added value.
The good news for entrepreneurs is that it has never been a better time to go into business. There are literally millions of people searching for a solution to their problems from deep in debt to medical conditions. All a resourceful entrepreneur has to do is offer a solution to any of these problems with valuable advice and practical answers.
The key is value. Price doesn’t matter if you’ve got the answer to a burning issue or desire.
